The Alexander Technique is a unique way of improving balance, posture and co-ordination. It was developed in 1890 by F. Matthias Alexander, a Shakespearian actor who solved his own breathing and vocal problems while acting. The Technique can help to increase confidence, self-esteem and spontaneity. It can be very useful to singers who suffer from tension problems and improving posture and breathing can dramatically improve their performance. The Alexander technique is used the world over in many colleges to help a multitude of muscular/skeletal problems.
Many people think that the Alexander Technique involves improving posture by ‘sitting up straight’. Nothing could be further from the truth. It involves releasing unconscious tension from our body to allow us to move through life with greater ease. It can dramatically help or prevent backache, arthritis, insomnia, as well as a whole range of physical aches and pains that are so common in our society today. As these tensions are released, so are many of the thoughts that hold us back from being who we truly are. By learning the Technique you may find that your confidence and self-esteem naturally grow. You may also find a natural spontaneity, a greater contentment and a deeper love of life.
Our bodies are our most precious possession, yet most of the time we give little attention to them, apart from wondering ‘how do I look’ or ‘am I dressed right?’ The human body is, in fact, an amazing anti-gravity mechanism, but most of us unconsciously interfere with the natural working and reflexes to such an extent countless millions of people throughout the world suffer acute backache every year. It is also estimated that many more people will suffer from asthma, insomnia, arthritis, headaches and migraine, all due to stress or excess muscle tension throughout the body. By practising the Alexander Technique you will bring more awareness to yourself, thus finding new ways of moving reducing the strain placed upon the body.
You will learn how to move with gravity, instead of against it, thus achieving greater ease of movement, this will in turn affects your mental and emotional outlook on life; you will feel calmer and therefore have a greater control of your own life.
The only requirements are patience and a willingness to let go of harmful habits that we have acquired throughout our lives. It can be especially useful for singers who suffer from tension problems when performing because they can gain maximum efficiency and ease which are essential for their voices to be at their best.
